Committee for Open Democracy Accredited For Bulgarian Parliamentary Elections


Kyiv, Ukraine – The Committee for Open Democracy was accredited this week by the Bulgarian Central Electoral Commission to formally observe the country’s parliamentary elections. The elections are scheduled for Sunday, May 12th.


“We are pleased to be accredited to observe these important parliamentary elections in one of the European Union’s newest member countries,” said Tom Nolan, The Committee’s Board Chairman. “We express our thanks to the both the Central Electoral Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for formal permission to observe these elections.”


The Committee observed local elections in Ukraine in October 2010, parliamentary elections in Moldova in 2010, parliamentary elections in Georgia in October 2012, parliamentary elections in Montenegro in October 2012, parliamentary elections in Ukraine in October 2012, the presidential runoff election in Slovenia in December 2012, local elections in Ukraine in February 2013, presidential elections elections in Montenegro in April 2013 and, most recently, became the first international organization to formally observe Crimean Tatar Medjlis elections.


“We thank the Bulgarian CEC and Ministry of Foreign Affairs for recognizing The Committee’s election monitoring expertise and experience,” said Executive Director Brian Mefford. “We respect and admire Bulgaria’s accession to the European Union and wish the Bulgarian people continued good fortune in administering these parliamentary elections.”

“We observe principles of objectivity, political impartiality and adherence to and respect for legislation of any country where we operate”, said Mefford.


The Committee is international in its membership and operates in the spirit of the United Nations Declaration of Principles for International Observation of Elections.
