(Skopje, FYR Macedonia) – The Central Election Commission of FYR Macedonia accredited the Committee for Open Democracy (COD) to officially observe the September 30, 2018 referendum. The referendum gives voters the option to approve a change from “The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” to the shorter “Northern Macedonia”. Approval of the name change may allow FYR Macedonia to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Since its founding in 2010, COD has been accredited to officially observe 20 elections in nine countries including Ukraine, Albania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Montenegro, Moldova, Slovenia and the United Kingdom. The Committee for Open Democracy is United States based, not for profit organization specializing in election observation. Established in 2010 by professionals in the election observation and broader democracy and governance field, the Committee seeks to improve the pre-electoral environment with concrete recommendations, prevent election fraud in the pre-election period and on Election Day as well as contribute to the overall electoral environment in developing democracies.
